Since the VT shooter did everything by the book when he bought that gun he used to kill all of these folks how
Paul B asked:
would any “better” gun legislation or gun control laws have avoided the killing of these people?
would any “better” gun legislation or gun control laws have avoided the killing of these people?
Does anyone actually think it would have?
It appears that his mental state was the problem here and not due to any lack of any gun control laws.

Clearly then, the mental state of all people wanting to buy a gun, or wanting to continue to own a gun should be regularly and frequently assessed. You’ve almost answered your own question.
Hey Paul……so true! But if you think about this had the Professor’s at the University level, Teacher’s from the high school level made serious entries in his records do you really believe he would have ever been able to obtain a GUN permit?
“I THINK NOT!”
Countries like England, who have gun control laws, don’t have shootings like this.
The problem may be the guys mental state, but the solution is to keep crazy people from buying guns.
And, contrary to what Virginia’s NRA says, we do NOT have a constitutional right ot bear arms. The actual wording is.
Congress shall pass no law (interfering) with the right to bear arms IN A WELL REGULATED MILITIA.
It says nothing about some backwoods hillbilly or mental patient’s right to run around anywhere, anytime with a weapon.
no nuts with guns
no balls
if you need a warm gun ,it proves insanity
just to want to own a gun is an act of terror
gun control lobby is just old men and fools
then you get the frightened girlly girls
they are acting in collusion to allow mass murder
thier lobby is for this crime
guns kill 19/20 thousand deaths a year
the gun lobby loonies lobby for criminals to murder
condone that done by thier lobby
The laws are slack and that’s why a known deranged man was able to legally buy a gun. Obviously you do need tougher legislation somewhere.
I am for the right to own a gun but I am also for responsible people owning a gun. If he had been required to take a 6 week class or something like that in gun safety and have an anger evalutaion done before being issued a gun I would be satisfied with the gun laws. But if he just went to a store that sells them and bought one without having to prove he does not have an anger control problem and can use a gun safely than, more needs to be done to get a gun I think. Not only for the victims but also for himself. If he would have failed an anger control problem maybe that would have been a warning to himself that he has issues he needs to address.
Note to one under god
In those fiqures of gun deaths you quote, did you know they include people shot committing crimes. Thats right, if a cop shoots a crook or a homeowner is forced to kill an intruder, they just put them all down as killed by gun. Thus, your numbers are bogus.
If the mental state of the VT shooter was analysed when he requested to purchase a gun, then this tradgedy could have resulted in less murder if not none at all….
Simple psychological testing… criminal checks etc could have stopped the VT shooter from getting a hold of a gun.
I don’t care what mental state you are in, it should never be so easy to buy a gun anywhere, how many times is someone going to burst into a school in the US and shoot people before they stop giving out guns. I heard on the news yesterday that all you need to get a gun in the State of Virginia is the permission from your parents. People say they want to protect themselves by having guns but they are just protecting themselves from other people who have guns – its a vicious circle.
utterlyagog, you might want to do a little more homework before you answere these questions. The actual wording of the second amendment is:
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Just FYI.
Also FYI “one under god” you need to do some homework as well. Not a single gun, of it own actions, has ever killed anyone. Regardless of that fact in 2004, the latest that data is available, 29, 569 people were killed by people using guns.
16,750 were suicides
11,624 were homocides
649 were accidental and those by law enforcement
So assuming the suicides would have found a means to their end one way or another without a gun, 12,273 people were unintentionally killed by someone with a gun.
Comparativley, that same year, 12,874 people were killed by drunk drivers. Hear any talk of banning alcohol?? Nope, me either. Get your facts straight people
He did lie on his application . He did not disclose depression or antidepressant usage.
we should have a longer waiting period and a better back ground check.
I don’t know if it would have changed things. He was planning this for awhile so I think he would figured out how to obtain a gun or would have done something different.
Its a shame and such a tragedy.
My prayers are with the family
And there are a lot of other crazy people who can go out and legally buy the same guns today. Actually it is a proven fact that just the desire to have a people killer gun reeks of paranoia.
There is the common saying “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” There is some truth to this but if you take the guns out of the hands of these people it becomes much more difficult to kill some one. The real issue isn’t so much guns but “hand guns”. If this kid could only get his hands on a rifle, he would have never have been able to walk from one side of campus to the other. If you look at statistics for countries that have strict hand gun legislation, the murder rates are significantly lower. There is the right to keep and bear arms, but is it necessary for people to own hand guns? I say no! Keep your hunting rifles, but give up your hand guns!
I would personally like to send out my deepest condolences to those affected by this act of terror. The nations’ hearts’ are with you all.
Gun control or gun bans would only increase problems. What is my logic?
It is already illegal to kill people, therefore legality of gun control will make no difference….
Guns would become just like drugs, high priced and only available to crooked people.
The only thing that stricter gun laws would do is prevent the honest person from protecting himself/herself from those who break the law and are using guns for negative reasons.
Think about it, drugs are illegal. Are there still drugs in our country? Yes. If guns are banned in our society, who will win? The crook who knows that most of his honest victims are unarmed or the unarmed citizen? Who will win?
Eldude;
How does one go about proving one does NOT have an anger control problem?
And- if you need a SIX-WEEK course to teach you gun safety, you are too stupid to have one anyway.
