What are people’s opinions on the VT shooting, and others like it, and their relationship to gun control laws?

gun control legislation
Christina C asked:

My feelings are that the VT shooting could have happened anywhere, including at my school in Nebraska. We just passed legislation that makes it legal to carry a concealed handgun with a license. This does not apply to schools, but colleges are not considered “schools.” So what do people think? Should gun control laws be passed to make our citizens safer, or should we continue to be bullied around by the NRA and Charles Heston?
I’d like to add that rude comments are not welcome. Just because I don’t agree with your opinion doesn’t make me stupid. It’s called democracy. Embrace it.

  1. Criminals will gets their guns no matter how much controls are there. Do you really want to take guns away from the responsible, law abiding citizens and leave nothing to defend yourself ?.

  2. My opinion is that non-citizens should not be allowed to buy guns in this country.

  3. At the risk of oversimplifying the issue, stricter gun laws will not prevent future tragedies. You can legislate how many guns and what type of guns people can have, but you can’t legislate how people will use them.

The fact that the shooter used standard handguns is proof of that. It’s not like he used an AK-47, MAC10, UZI or an M-16.

  4. I believe iof a person had a concealed weapon with a license at VT, there would have been deaths, fewer than what it was. If a teacher had a legal weapon, this tragety could have been stopped alot sooner.

  5. Passing more gun control laws will not make citizens safer. In fact, it may make them less safe. Criminals are more likely to strike if they believe their victims are unarmed.

  6. I would like to point out that the mayor of the Japanese city of Nagasaki was assassinated earlier this week… by a gunman.

Japan has the some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, and some of the best enforcement.

As others have said, laws can only take the guns out of the hands of the law abiding citizens, not the criminals.

  7. Yes, you are a bright one, aren’t you?

Criminals are criminals because they break laws. You can pass 239487398423847272 laws restricting guns, and a criminal (one who breaks the law) won’t give a happy damn about a single one of them. The only thing these laws do is to make law abiding citizens more vulnerable to non-law abiding criminals.

Maybe you will understand when you are ***** by some gun-wielding criminal because all you could use to defend yourself was a butter knife because of all of the wonderful laws you managed to pass with your knee-jerk reaction.

People like you are stupid beyond compare.

  8. No guns were allowed on VT’s campus.

    Gun control didn’t work there.

What if some of the student had carry permits and had guns to kill this nut job when he started shooting. Lives would have been saved. Of course, being a gun free campus no one had a chance.

I do not own a gun and do not belong to the NRA but many people have been saved by normal citizens carrying guns.

  9. You could throw in all sorts of new laws…BUT thats not going to stop someone from killing someone.
The gun owners I know have respect for their weapons.

  10. I think that if you are an employee of the government that you should be able to have weapons, just for the simple fact that those are the ones who are the most trained on attacks like VT. There is really no logical way to stop suprising attacks like VT unless the security rises at high populated areas, with metal detectors and such. There are so many people that graduate from the criminal justice department but jobs are so limited in that kind of major. Around my town theres about 513 applicants that apply for one police officer job. Seriously we actually have enough people looking for jobs like security that, it would also help with more job opportunities all across the united states. There are high populated areas that actually do this, so why can’t that become law.

  11. and instead be bullied around by liberals, please europe, england have gun control laws yet criminals still have guns over there,if a nut job whats to kill someone,or alot of someones he will find a way,at v t he could of easily taken one or several bottles filled with gas or any flammable liquid or material and accomplished the same results, liberals take your head out of your @ss and quit blaming gun owners for the actions! of a nut job

  12. Actually, Nunya, the butterknife will probably be made illegal by some random bill to protect people in eateries from attack.

So in all likely hood, she’ll be defending herself with a sugar packet, or a container of hand lotion.

“Arrg! Help me, this Nivea hand cream is making my hands slick! Aieee:.

Yeah, whatever. Keep reminding yourself that Criminals are called as such for a reason. Namely because they don’t obey the laws. :p

  13. Gun control won’t stop psychos from shooting innocent people. Just as drug laws don’t prevent meth heads from cooking up dangerous drugs in their kitchens. Unfortunately, more laws won’t guarantee your safety, keep in mind that violent criminals don’t care about laws. Severe gun control would only create a huge black market for guns, which in turn will create more violent crime. I see the NRA as a necessary evil. I don’t agree with some of their extremism, but I’m glad they’re in place to fight for our right to own a gun and defend ourselves. That evil mess that took the lives of the people at VT was to blame, not the weapon he used. If he didn’t have access to a gun, he would have used a different weapon, perhaps something worse.

  14. Charlton Heston is doing you a favour by telling you that gun control laws will not make you safer, far from it.
Gun control laws only effect law-abiding citizens, who will not carry guns because its against the law. **** filled fanatics will find black market guns or build their own (remember zip guns?) and will have a free run against quarry who cannot defend themselves. The worst single serial shooting rampage in the world is still Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia (not a country noted for gun culture) where 38 unarmed tourists were killed by a single murderer who took his time walking from person to person, knowing there would be no-one firing back. When the Police turned up he surrendered immediately, and is still in Gaol.
Laws won’t make guns disappear from criminals arsenals, only from honest citizen’s ownership.
It just doesn’t work to “make our citizens safer”.
    Sorry.
